The Interactive Spatial Surface - Blended Interaction on a Stereoscopic Multi-Touch Surface

Recent advancements in the field of display technology provide innovative possibilities to create setups capable of displaying three-dimensional virtual environments in unknown detail. Also with new advancements in touch technology, it is possible to create multi-touch surfaces of any size. Furthermore, cost-efficient depth cameras such as the Microsoft Kinect allow affordable and precise hand tracking. In this paper we present „Spatial Surface“, a system combining classical interaction with multi-touch-tables with direct mid-air selection and manipulation of stereoscopically projected virtual objects. It is a revamped version of the smARTbox, a portable, multi-touch-enabled stereoscopic setup based on out-of-the-box technology. By utilizing a state-of-the-art 3D-capable UHD display and a high-performance touch frame, Spatial Surface offers highest quality exploration with out-of the-box components.
