Augmented Virtual Studio for Architectural Exploration

Immersive virtual environments and natural 3D user interfaces have shown great potential in the field of architecture, especially for exploration, presentation and review of designs. In this paper we propose an augmented virtual studio environment for architectural exploration based on a mixed-reality head-mounted display environment. The proposed system supports (1) real walking through large virtual building models, (2) visual feedback about the userís body and (3) display of real-world objects in the virtual view based on color transfer functions. We describe the locomotion user interface for immersive exploration, as well as a mixed-reality 3D user interface for interaction with virtual designs.
